Johnston brings together bright, creative, independent, and active students with a genuine interest in academic and civic pursuits—it is a place where diversity is cherished and ideas are debated. Today some 200 talented and passionate Redlands students live and learn together in the Johnston complex, which includes two residence halls, faculty offices, a coffee house, classrooms, and community spaces.
"Johnston for me is a new approach of learning, of education. I am very passionate about creating my own path, and having control over my education. Johnston allows me to do that. I can combine all of the things that I am interested in, into a Bachelor’s degree. You have the power to just go for it! Follow your passions. You have a lot of guidance from your professors, peers, and academic advisor, but it’s all about supporting you and your passions. There are such creative people here, where you wouldn’t imagine people being able to put together some of those things- but they are able to do so here. In which, they gain a scholarly understanding of their interests through the Johnston process of breath and depth. So Johnston is a new way to look at the world."
"What drew me to Johnston was the community atmosphere. Yes the university had small class sizes, but Johnston had the aspect of the living-learning community where my professor would know my name and be able to help personalize every course to my specific interests. Here my professors genuinely have an interest in my well being and my academic interests. ‘Traditional’ barriers do not exist, professors understand that learning is mutual. We are all a support for one another."
